Former NFL Star and Super Bowl XV Champion Announces Candidacy for Utah’s 4th Congressional District
Salt Lake City, UT – Former Super Bowl Champion, Burgess Owens, has officially declared his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Utah’s Congressional District 4.
Burgess has an impressive resume - both on and off the field. Since retiring from the NFL, Burgess has devoted his time to mentoring at-risk youth. He founded Second Chance 4 Youth, a Utah based non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping troubled and incarcerated youth. Burgess is an outspoken advocate for conservative values and intends to return Utah’s 4th Congressional District back to Republicans.
“I believe that the principles upon which our country was built are founded on a bedrock of eternal truths – that these truths, when applied, build men and women of character and families with purpose and vision,” states Burgess. “I’m running for Congress because we deserve a Representative who believes in the idea of individual liberties… Since day one, our current Congressman has supported a liberal agenda in Washington, D.C. that bears little resemblance to our values and principles back home in Utah.”
Burgess grew up in Tallahassee, FL during a time when the barriers of segregation were being torn down. As the third African-American granted a scholarship to play football at the University of Miami, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology & Chemistry. During his college career, Burgess was named to Who’s Who among College Students in American Universities and Colleges. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Outstanding College Athletes of America and later to the University of Miami’s Hall of Fame and the Orange Bowl Ring of Honor.
Following college, Burgess was the 13th player drafted in the 1st round by the NY Jets. He was selected as the Jets Rookie of the Year and chosen to play on the NFL’s All- Rookie team. He was also selected as the Defensive Team Captain for three seasons. After being traded to the Oakland Raiders, Burgess led the Raiders defensive squad in tackles on their way to the 1980 Super Bowl Championship. In 1982, his last year with the Raiders, he was selected as 1st Alternate to the NFL Pro-Bowl.
He is an outspoken advocate for America’s Free Market system and the opportunity it affords ALL to dream and pursue ownership. He is putting forth a platform based on Booker T. Washington’s four tenets to help all Americans:
Head: Education, intelligence and wisdom. It’s important that we make sure all of the children of our nation have the best education possible. This cannot be accomplished by the federal government. Education should be governed on the state level.
Heart: Service, humility and charity. We need to get back to the fundamentals of taking care of our neighbor.
Hands: Industry, productivity, entrepreneurship. We must incentivize industry - not penalize it.
Home: Men and Women of character produce families of respect, purpose and vision. We must understand the most important principles and lessons will not be taught in school, but in the home.
